Tips for Dealing with Acne and Spots

I decided to create this post’s header to be cute and pretty, everything spots aren’t basically. I mean come on now, spots are never a welcomed asset upon one’s skin. If you are reading this post then you have most likely dealt with spots before and are fairly familiar with the amount of havoc they can cause. If you haven’t then you will one day and to be prepared for that fateful day then I recommend you keep reading. If you frequently deal with spots or have some that just won’t go away then I may have some tips to help you.

To add weight to these tips, I myself have dealt with acne for many years. During secondary school it was probably at its worst. The spots all over my forehead and around my chin made me so self conscious and resulted in me feeling embarrassed about myself and how I looked. Barring in mind that I was 13 when this first started and it didn’t get better really until I started college at 16, I have learned what is bad and what is good for spots over many years. Trust me, these tips worked for me when my skin was looking like the Himalayas, full of protruding spots upon my face. They should work for you to make things better but I cannot promise instant nor incredible results, just because these things helped my skin massively doesn’t mean to say they will for everyone else as we’re all different. I’m here to help and I really hope I can in this case after my experiences.

Here are my Tips:

No Touchy!

Yes, this is an obvious one, however ask yourself how much do you listen to it? The temptation to touch or fiddle with a spot can be irresistible, trust me I know, but you mustn’t! The second you feel or notice a spot coming, leeaaavveeeee itttt I beg of you. There are approximately 5000 germs on your hands at any given time, spreading them onto your face where bacteria is already brewing a spot under the skin is just like personally asking the spot to get worse (if spots could talk of course). Once the spot has formed don’t pop it, not even if it has a white head to it, not ever. It is a myth that it is ok to pop a spot if it has a head, it isn’t. By pinching at a spot in any way or form you are risking pushing the bacteria further down into the skin, it may appear to have helped at first but that spot is well and truly coming back, most likely worse than before. Some sites suggest using a needle or pin and oozing the contents of the spot out, once again this is silly idea. By inserting a needle into the skin you’re also inserting whatever bacteria that was on the needle in too, I have tried this myself on multiple occasions when I was young and foolish and honestly it made it so much worse than before every single time.

Change them Sheets!

I think most people would be surprised if they knew how much dirt, dried sweat and god knows what else lay on their pillow… I’m not saying you need to change your sheets every day but you should be changing them often enough. I prolong the effort of changing my bed sheets by flipping them over as a bonus tip! When you are pressing your face against all of those germs, sweat and dirt, it can create a suitable habitat for bacteria to thrive upon and create spots.

Use Adequate Skincare!

If you use face-wipes and don’t know why your spots won’t go away then I can almost certainly tell you that your method of skincare is a contributor to the what probably feels like an eternal residence of your spots. Face-wipes do not remove makeup, they more so just spread it around. One face wipe will remove approximately a third of the makeup you have on, although it might seem like it has all gone, it hasn’t. Face-wipes are great for little touch-ups or maybe if you have got in from a big night out and can’t be bothered to spend time getting all your makeup off. However they are not regarded as proper skincare. I tend to like using a cleansing water, such as the Garner Micellar cleansing water, with cotton pads, however I also use Liz Earl’s cleanse & polish with a muslin cloth to exfoliate every couple of days. Having the right Moisturiser is important too, knowing what kind of skin type you are and picking moisturiser accordingly to suit your skin type can dramatically change the look of your skin. Even if you don’t wear makeup, it is still important to use adequate skincare. Throughout the day your skin picks up germs and dirt which, if they don’t get washed off, can cause spots.

Hair Everywhere!

When your hair covers an area of your face, e.g. your forehead that is also prone to sweat, it can form the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, dirt and sweat get trapped between and within the hair and your skin making the area moist and shaded from the light. Obviously you want to be able to style your hair how you like without worrying about potentially inviting harmful, spot causing bacteria, and you can! However, at times when you aren’t in public you should try to tie your hair up, away from your face or maybe even just use a headband. You should do this especially when sleeping as most people sweat a lot without realising when you sleep.

Don’t get Trapped!

For most people, when they get a spot they like to conceal it with makeup. If you can, I would refrain form from doing this as much as possible. Letting the infected area breathe will quicken the healing process. Think of your spot almost as a wound, if you cover up the wound then bacteria can become trapped and therefore reproduce to make it worse or even cause an infection. Either way if you put a plaster on a cut, the longer you leave it there for, the longer it will take to heal. Using makeup on a spot has the same effect as a plaster would on a wound and can lead to a vicious circle:
 – The spot appears -> you put makeup on it -> spot gets worse -> more makeup is applied -> spot becomes very angry and expresses this by looking very red and inflamed -> makeup can no longer cover this now volcano on your face but you continue to try anyway… – and so forth…
My advice if you really can’t go without putting makeup on the area, use a very thin coat of a water-based concealer and then a translucent powder, it won’t cover it completely but it should do so enough. After all everyone gets spots pretty much and should be able to understand each other’s pain and not look down on those with spots.


If you are anything like me then your skin will break-out like crazy the second you get a little bit stressed. When you are at school, college, uni or work it can be almost impossible not to get stressed at times. When stress is unavoidable it’s important to make sure you give yourself time to chill out, relax and have a nice warm cup of tea. Don’t let the stress build up either, there are plenty of ways I have found to deal with stress, however that is for another blog post. What I will say though, is that bottling it up isn’t healthy and won’t help. Talk to someone about it, do something that makes you happy, have a bath, the things you can do to reduce stress are endless.

You Are What You Eat!

I’m sure you have heard that term of speech before, but it is so true with regards to having healthy skin! Having a healthy, balanced diet is essential to give your immune system the best possible chance at fighting bacteria and producing efficient white blood cells to do so. If all you eat is fat and carbohydrate then you are starving your body of the vitamins and minerals that it needs in order to perform at it’s best and result in fewer spots, happening less often and healing quicker!


Another super common one that you have probably heard a million times but have thought nothing of. I am 100% guilty to not drinking enough water and it frustrates me so much because it really is important! When your body is hydrated it is reflected in your skin. By drinking enough fluids you are enabling your body to cleanse itself and, not just look, but physically be refreshed.

Sleepy Time!

Getting a decent nights sleep is important as this is the time your body is at it’s most active recovery wise. If you are tired throughout the day then your body is low on energy, reducing it’s efficiency with regards to creating white blood cells and fighting the bacteria that cause spots. I know how hard it is to fit in the correct amount of sleep when you are up at 11:00pm still doing your homework that was actually due in yesterday when you have to be up at 7:00am to get ready to go to school again. It is hard but it is so important and you will see results if you get plenty of sleep and go to bed at a reasonable time.

Have Hope!

This one I feel is one of the most important tips. If you choose to get upset and stressed about your spots then, as weird as it sounds, your body will reflect this. Staying positive is hard when you feel conscious of your appearance but like I said before, we all get spots. Even someone as flawless looking as Taylor Swift will get spots, it is natural. What I am trying to say is that, since everyone gets spots at some point in their lives you shouldn’t be judged for when your time comes. It doesn’t matter what other people think or say to you, your spot will come and go, sometimes it will take a long time and other times it might only last a couple of days. Some of us are more unlucky than others and have acne where spots are highly resistant and stubborn and therefore last a long time, but remember that you are not alone, it will get better I promise. Like I said in the introduction, my skin took between three and four years to improve properly, everyone is different. Have hope, don’t let the spots get the better of you!

So that’s it for my tips regarding spots and acne! If you are really self conscious about your skin and it is getting in the way of your life then I would recommend that you see your GP, it is very often that teenagers going through puberty or young adults, even adults, go to the doctors to seek advice regarding their skin. If you are between the ages of 13-20 then it is more than likely that you are struggling with spots because of hormonal changes occurring in your body, sometimes these hormones can have a serious effect on your skin and your doctor may feel it will benefit you that they prescribe you hormone controlling tablets that should help to calm down your skin. However, don’t go if you simply have a couple of spots, only go if it really is bad and it is getting in the way of your life.
