I only picked this product up a few days ago but I cannot stop using it now. Before I bought this primer I didn’t actually use a primer at all in my routine. I used to use ‘POREfessional’ by Benefit however I dont know why but I didn’t see much of a difference from it, which is weird because it is such a successful product. As a result of this, I went off primers all together, thinking that they just did’t work on my skin. Since I can remember there has been an endless battle between my dry skin and makeup. I wrote about my ‘holy grail foundation‘, Chanel Vitalumière, last month saying that I had finally found a foundation that doesn’t cake on my dry patches at all, which I always seem to have even though I use a high-end moisturiser, two times a day for my specific skin type… Because I have to use a more ‘oily’ foundation on top of an intensely hydrating moisturiser, I occasionally find the foundation slips slightly. I also have prominent pores which the foundation can sink into, I knew that most people use primers to hide their pores and increase the staying power of their makeup and so I caved, gave in and did my research into what primer I should get that was actually going to work this time.
That’s when I read about Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer. I had seen a few youtubers talk about it and use it but it was reading other people’s blog reviews that really sold it to me as well as the awards it has received. It was the winner of the ‘Best of Sephora Award’ for ‘Best primer’, one of Marie Claire’s ’25 products that will change your life’, an inStyle ‘Best Beauty Buy’ and ‘Handbag.com Readers Choice Beauty Award 2012’ for ‘Best Foundation Primer’. All I can say is that this product deserves all the recognition it can get because it really has changed the look and staying power of my makeup, which is why I have chosen to write about it.
The product is oil-free but still gives a really ‘baby-skin-smooth’ kind of feeling. It creates the perfect smooth canvas for applying all your makeup, it minimises the look of my pores and gives an even smoother looking finish after I have applied my foundation. Here are some pictures of my results. (cue the full zoom pictures that expose my flaws just for you guys – aren’t you lucky! As a small disclaimer, I am in no way super confident in my skin what so ever. Like everyone, I have flaws. I have taken these photos in the highest definition I could for the benefit of showing you the reality of this product and how well I have found it to work)
This is what my skin looked like after wearing just my foundation (no primer) after about 4 hours of walking outside. The foundation has sunk into my pores making them look a lot more obvious, you can also see areas when the foundation has come away slightly.
This is my skin with all face makeup removed so you can see that my pores really do like making themselves visible… I will say that I added a small amount of definition to this photo and decreased the saturation so that they were more visible (that must be a first, editing a photo to make myself look even worse!)
This is after I had applied the primer and my foundation. I have not softened or edited this photo in any sense to loose definition, this primer really does work. As you can see the primer has completely softened the look and given my foundation the ability to be perfectly even and not sink in to any crevasses as such! The Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer really does live up to the hype in my opinion and is worth the £25.50 I paid for it. I don’t think the photos I have taken really do the primer justice, I have a HD camera with a very large lens that will literally pick up every little detail, more details than I think the human eye can even see. After I had applied my makeup I was almost in ‘awh’ at how much of a difference it made.
I took this image about 3 hours after I had applied all my makeup. When I was going through my pictures I could hardly tell the difference between the pictures I had taken straight after application and the ones 3 hours after! (the only way I could was because of the rest of my make up) What I am trying to say is that this primer provides a fantastic aid to the staying power to your makeup while not letting it sink into lines and pores at the same time. I am obsessed. I think I simply got unlucky with the Benefit ‘POREfessional’ and now I have found something that is not leaving my makeup routine anytime soon! Getting this primer has been one of the best decisions I have made in 2015 I swear, I am forever in Smashbox’s debt from them creating it.
So to conclude, this product is incredible and you should go buy it, end of story. It really is worth buying just to see if it works as well for you as it did for me, chances are that it will. I had never tried a Smashbox product before this one but now I am definitely going to do some research into more of their products and try some more things, I actually already have my eye on one of their eyeshadow palettes!
Here is my finished look after I had done all of my makeup upon the smooth canvas my Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer had set for me.
I full on adore this product and hope you do as well if you choose to try it. Let me know in the comments what you think of it if you have tried it out, i’d love to know.
